Complete the Training Academy to learn the basics of Asheron's Call, gain useful starter equipment and level up from 1 to 5.

Walkthrough & Notes[]

Entering the Academy[]

  1. Speak with the Society Greeter, hand her your Calling Stone, then use the door to the East.
  2. Speak with Samuel, then find all 3 pieces of armor and return to him.
    1. Leather Cap - South Room
    2. Leather Gauntlets - North Room
    3. Leather Leggings - South Room
  3. Use the door to the East and speak with the Training Master.
  4. Kill a Sparring Golem, loot an Academy Token from its corpse, and return it to the Training Master.
  5. Enter the Central Courtyard portal to the right and speak with the Academy Foreman.
  6. Take the passage to the West and kill a Carpenter Wasp. Loot a Carpenter Wasp Wing from its corpse and return it to the Academy Foreman.
  7. Speak to the Academy Blacksmith to the South, head through the South passage and kill a Thieving Thrungus to retrieve Bellows. Return them to the Academy Blacksmith to receive an Academy Library Key.
  8. Use the Academy Library Key on the door to the East and speak with the Academy Researcher.
  9. Purchase the Oil of Rendering from the Academy Researcher, and apply it to your Training Weapon to create an Academy Weapon.
  10. Head up the stairs.
  11. Speak with the Senior Guard, then take the portal to the Outer Courtyard.
  12. Speak with the Sentry. Take the stairs down then enter the Olthoi Tunnels. Kill the Adolescent Olthoi and loot a Protection Orb. Return the orb to the Sentry and you'll be given an Academy Coat and a Facility Hub Portal Gem.

After Leaving the Academy[]

  1. Speak to one of the four Lifestone Greeters to learn about the Lifestone and receive a starter quest contract and advance one level.
  2. Using the information in your contract panel (quill icon in the lower right corner), speak to Bartender Greeter inside the local tavern.
  3. They will tell you a little about Contracts and the local Barkeep who sells contracts for the nearby Starter Quests. He will also give you enough xp to advance one level and another mini-quest which he gives you the contract for.
  4. Head to one of the four Pathwarden Greeters who are found near the Lifestone to complete the "Find the Pathwarden" contract and earn another 12,500 xp. Give your Pathwarden Token to the greeter to receive a Pathwarden Supply Key, the key unlocks the Pathwarden Chest that contains race specific starter armor and a robe.
  5. Non Repeatable you have found better armor and no longer need the pathwarden armor, you can turn it back in to one of the Pathwarden Greeters for other useful items. Don't forget to wield the Pathwarden Trinket to increase experience earned by 4%.

To being your training, speak to the Society Greeter. Walk up to the Society Greeter using the 'W' key, then double-click on her to initiate a conversation.

[Dialog Box] When a character speaks to you, her chat is displayed in the chat box at the bottom of your screen. Read the text in your chat window to see what the Society Greeter as to say.

Society Greeter tells you, "Hail and welcome to Dereth! No time to chat! Time to get on with your training!

Society Greeter tells you, "Click on the Backpack in the lower right corner of your screen to open your Inventory. Click on the blue Calling Stone, and drag it to me."

Society Greeter tells you, "Excellent! Your backpack contains all of the items in your inventory. You will notice that your pack contains multiple bags. Over time you can pick up more bags, thereby increasing the number of items you can carry!

Society Greeter tells you, "Why don't you go talk to the Agent in the next room? Double-click the doors to open them."

[Dialog Box] If you wish to skip this tutorial, go talk to Jonathan in the next room. He will reward you with all the items and experience you would have otherwise received by completing the Academy. But be warned; once you leave the Academy, you can never come back.

Jonathan tells you, "If you want to skip your training and leave the Academy early, give this token back to me."

You allow Society Greeter to examine your Academy Exit Token.

Society Greeter tells you, "Ah, you must have confused me with Jonathan. Give this token to Jonathan and he will let you exit the Training Academy early. But beware! If you leave before you've been fully trained, you may be in for frequent trips to the Life Stone!"

Samuel says, "Double-click on me to hear what I have to say."

Samuel tells you, "Looks like you need some armor! There are 3 different pieces of armor here. Can you find them all? Double-click on me again when you are done."

[Dialog Box] Use your bracket keys ( [ ] ) to cycle through nearby items. Walk up to the item and double-click on it to pick it up. You can also press the 'R' key to pick up items. Cycle through the items in these rooms and see if you can find the the Leather Gloves, Leather Leggings, and Leather Cap.

[Dialog Box] Each piece of armor or clothing that you equip has a specific Armor Level, or AL. your armor absorbs a portion of all physical attacks that hit you. The higher your armor's AL, the more useful that piece of armor.

[Dialog Box] Double-click an armor piece in your inventory in order to wear it. Each piece of armor covers a specific body part and offers protection to that body part alone. Additionally, you cannot wear multiple pieces of armor on the same body part. For example, if you later find a cap that you like better than this one, you will have to un-equip this cap before you can wear your new one.

[Dialog Box] You can examine items in your inventory and in the world in order to view their stats. Click once on an item, then press the 'E' key to open the Examine panel. You can also right-click on items in your inventory to bring up this panel.

Samuel tells you, "You found some armor! To equip your armor, drag it from your backpack onto your paperdoll. You can wear armor over your clothes, but you cannot wear a piece of armor over another piece of armor.

Samuel tells you, "You may now proceed to the Training Area.

Training Master tells you, "As you proceed through the Training Area, warriors should read the signs on the left. Spellcasters should read the signs on the right.

Training Master tells you, "The signs will tell you how to retrieve the Academy Token. Bring that token back to me.
Sparring Golem Combat Dialog

Sparring Golem tells you, "A monster's health is displayed below its name in the bottom-right corner of the screen."

Sparring Golem tells you, "For more information about a target, select it and then click on the magnifying glass icon."

Sparring Golem tells you, "Press the [Backspace] key to select your closest attacker."

Sparring Golem tells you, "Use the [-] and [+] keys to cycle through nearby targets."

Sparring Golem tells you, "You can adjust your slider to make your attacks more powerful."

Sparring Golem tells you, "You can hit high, medium, or low. Aim high to hit hovering targets. Aim low to attack smaller targets."

[Dialog Box] When you kill a monster, double-click on its body to see if it carries loot. Double-click on the items in the creature's loot panel to pick them up.

[Dialog Box] You have acquired the Academy Token. Return this item to the Training Master in the Practice Area.

You give Training Master Academy Token

Training Master tells you, "Excellent work! You have completed your combat training! You may now take the portal to the Central Courtyard. Once you have teleported to the Central Courtyard, speak to the Academy Foreman to continue your training."

You've earned 1,000 experience.

[Dialog Box] As you defeat monster and complete quests, you will earn experience points. When you earn enough experience points, you will earn a new level. You must spend your experience point into your skills and attributes in order to increase you abilities. Click on the icon with the flexed arm in order to access your Skills & Attributes panel.
Speaking to Training Master again

Training Master tells you, "You have completed your combat training. You must take the portal to the Central Courtyard."

You allow Society Greeter to examine your Letter From Home

Society Greeter tells you, "This is yours. Keep it if you like, or just put it on the ground to get rid of it. Of course, if you want to keep the world free from litter, you can give this note - and any other trash you might have - to a Town Crier."

You allow Society Greeter to examine your Restoring the Training Academies

Society Greeter tells you, "Ah, you found one of our confidential missives! No, don't worry, I'm not angry. You should read it. It will give you some idea of the current political situation here on Dereth."

You allow Society Greeter to examine your Combat and Spellcasting Guide.

Society Greeter tells you, "Ah yes, a book about fighting! No true Explorer can survive long in this world without some offensive capability."

You allow Society Greeter to examine your Guide to Healing.

Society Greeter tells you, "You really should read this book. Unless you know how to heal yourself, you won't survive long in the outside world."

You allow Society Greeter to examine your Guide to Raising Skills and Attributes.

Society Greeter tells you, "Unless you know how to improve your skills and attributes, you're less useful than a Tusker in a smithy! Read this book. You will be glad you did."

You allow Society Greeter to examine your Tinkering.

Society Greeter tells you, "I've never really gotten the hang of salvaging. But I hear it's quite useful."

[Dialog Box] Portals will take you from one location to another. Some portals are only usable if you meet certain requirements. Those requirements are usually listed on the portal's ID panel.

Academy Foreman says, "Double-click on me to hear what I have to say."

Academy Foreman tells you, "Help has arrived at last! Quickly, Carpenter Wasps have infested my woodpile! There are so many of them; could you help me clear out a few? They are here through this door beside me. If you bring me one of their wings to prove that you have taken some of them out, I will surely reward you."

[Dialog Box] Keys allow you to open locked doors. Double-click on a key in your inventory, then place the bullseye over a locked door. Click on the door to use the key. Remember, each door usually has its own key. Some doors have no key at all.

Senior Guard tells you, "A hive of Olthoi just breached the walls of the Outer Courtyard. I need you to help us clear them out. Go through this portal, then talk to the Sentry.

Sentry tells you, "You must be the one the Senior Guard told me about. Thank you for your assistance.

Sentry tells you, "A hive of Olthoi just breached the Outer Wall. They stole a collection of Protection Orbs. Without those orbs, we have no way of shielding ourselves from their Queen!

Sentry tells you, "You must infiltrate the hive and travel as deep into it as you can. Find the Adolescent Olthoi and kill it. Bring back one of those orbs!

Speaking to Sentry again (Holtburg Academy)

Sentry tells you, "You must leave here. There is nothing more that we can teach you here. Use the portal to Holtburg. When you get there, seek out Flinrala Ryndmad. She may have a task for you. Take care in your adventures, friend."
